OVERVIEW:

Embark on a breathtaking adventure through Morocco’s diverse landscapes, from the towering peaks of the High Atlas Mountains to the golden dunes of the Sahara Desert, ending in the historical city of Fes. This journey combines cultural heritage, dramatic scenery, and immersive experiences.

ITINERARY:

Driving Distance: ~ 330 km (6-7 hrs)

• Morning Departure: After breakfast, we leave Marrakech and head towards the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260m) – the highest mountain pass in Morocco, offering stunning panoramic views.

• Aït Benhaddou Kasbah: A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Morocco’s most famous ksars (fortified villages). Walk through its mudbrick alleys, admire the ancient Berber architecture, and see where movies like Gladiator and Game of Thrones were filmed.

• Ouarzazate – The Hollywood of Morocco: A quick stop in this cinematic city, home to the Atlas Film Studios and Taourirt Kasbah, a former palace of the Glaoui family.

• Dades Valley & Gorge: As the road winds through the Valley of Roses, known for its annual rose festival, we arrive at Dades Gorges, famous for its dramatic rock formations called "Monkey Fingers."

• Overnight Stay: Traditional guesthouse with a stunning view over the valley.

Driving Distance: ~ 270 km (5-6 hrs)

• Todra Gorge: A spectacular canyon with towering cliffs reaching 300 meters, where Berber climbers and nomads can often be seen navigating the rugged terrain. A short hike along the riverbed allows you to soak in the beauty of this geological wonder.

• Merzouga – Gateway to the Sahara: The landscape transitions from rocky plateaus to the vast sand dunes of Erg Chebbi, some of which rise up to 150 meters.

• Camel Trek Adventure: As the sun sets, embark on a camel ride through the golden dunes, guided by local nomads. The changing colors of the sand at dusk are a mesmerizing sight.

• Berber Camp Experience: Arrive at a luxury or standard desert camp, where you’ll be welcomed with traditional mint tea. Enjoy a delicious Moroccan dinner under a sky filled with millions of stars, accompanied by Berber drumming and storytelling.

• Overnight Stay: Nomadic-style tents in the heart of the Sahara.

Driving Distance: ~ 460 km (7-8 hrs)

• Sunrise Over the Dunes: An early wake-up to witness one of the most magical sights in the desert – the sunrise over Erg Chebbi, painting the sand in hues of orange, pink, and gold.

• Ziz Valley: After breakfast, we drive along the lush Ziz Valley, known for its date palm plantations and picturesque kasbahs.

• Midelt – The Apple Capital: Nestled between the Middle Atlas Mountains, this Berber town is famous for its apple orchards and serves as a refreshing stop for lunch.

• Cedar Forest – Home of the Barbary Apes: As we enter the Middle Atlas region, we stop at the Cedar Forest near Azrou, home to Barbary macaques. Feel free to feed them (with care) as they curiously approach visitors.

• Ifrane – The Switzerland of Morocco: This charming alpine-style town, with its European architecture and clean streets, is a stark contrast to the desert landscapes seen earlier.

• Arrival in Fes: Check into your riad or hotel for a relaxing evening.

Walking Tour (~5-6 hrs)

• The Medina of Fes (Fes el Bali): Step into the world’s largest car-free urban area, a labyrinth of 9,000+ narrow alleys, bustling souks, and historical wonders.

• Al Quaraouiyine University: Founded in 859 AD, this is the oldest university in the world, still functioning today.

• Chouara Tanneries: Witness the traditional leather-dyeing process from a panoramic terrace, where workers use natural ingredients to treat hides.

• Bou Inania Madrasa: A stunning 14th-century Islamic school with intricate Moroccan tilework and cedarwood carvings.
